Sicky Bad...

Hello lovelies,

Unfortunately I won't make it in to school today due to a horrible tummy bug, but I have left some work for you to complete in my absence.

Today I want you to focus on the representation of disability in TV drama.

In his 1991 study, Paul Hunt identified certain stereotypes that the media use to represent disability:

As a pitiable or pathetic

An object of curiosity of violence

Sinister or evil

Awkward atmosphere

Laughable

His/her own worst enemy

As a burden

Being unable to participate in daily life

You might want to discuss some of Hunt's findings as part of your analysis/argument/development (are any of his findings evident within the media text? If so, how are they communicated?)

I want you to analyse the clip below and write a response to the following

Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of disability using the following:

  • Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
  • Editing
  • Sound
  • Mise en scène

Finger crossed I will see you tomorrow

Bedtime Reading!

Happy Sunday everyone! I know that you are all really busy reading/recapping/annotating your notes from last week so I won’t blab on for too long! As you are all aware, you should be undertaking some form of independent study throughout the course of the week (5 hrs) as well as any homework set (1 hr 30 mins), so to help you along the way, I have uploaded a great little article on the film industry for you to read – this is linked to the lesson we had on Thursday! Please read at your leisure (before Thursday)! See you all tomorrow Miss B x Film Industry

Well done!

Hey folks,

Just wanted to say a MASSIVE well done for all your efforts in class today - I was very impressed with the sophisticated comments you made on both media texts (even if you did all whine at the sight of Joey Essex!). Lets keep up the high standards and I look forward to reading all of your amazing homework responses on Thursday!

Go team Media Studies!

UPDATE: Summer Homework

Hi all, It's been brought to my attention by a few people that the summer homework booklet refers to two pieces of reading which aren't in the document. One is a reference to "Chapter 12 on Genre" and one is to "Blumler & Katz' Uses and Gratifications Theory". Apologiews for the omission. Luckily, a quick Google* search will provide the information you need - all you need to find is a definition of Genre, and a definition of Blumler & Katz's Uses & Gratifications theory. If you don't have any luck, then see me on Friday after you've met with your tutors. - JL *Other search engines are available, kids.

Summer Homework

Welcome to the blog, Year 12!

This is where I'll upload all of the resources you use next year, as well as having key deadlines and dates for you. You need to keep checking this regularly throughout the course - and you'll also start keeping your own blog for your work.

Below is the work I'd like you to complete over the summer break. It's due in on the first Media Studies lesson in September, either electronically or in hardcopy. If there are any problems or questions, you can email me - my address is at the top of the blog. Make sure you tackle every task, even if you're unsure about them - that way, I can work out what you already know, and what you don't.

Have a great summer!

- You should re-film any scenes within the next film as needed.

We will be peer assessing your rough cut at the end of this half-term.

Also, next week i will posting feedback on here for each of your blogs.
